Neck pain

David Gitonga, Physiotherapist, treating patient
  • Neck pain is currently ranked as the fourth most disabling musculoskeletal problem globally, affecting 30% of the population globally and 50% of the affected population tend to suffer for more than six months.

  • In UK alone, neck and cervical related injuries costs the healthcare system a staggering  amount of missed work days.

  • The most common causes of neck injuries are traffic accidents (whiplash), poor manual handling, high impact especially in contact sports as well as falls.

  • Neck problems, on the other hand, are mostly associated with the posture we assume during work, when driving, during sleep, or during leisure time. As technology advances, ergonomically friendly designs can reduce the risk of straining in manual handling as well as for those who work in front of a monitor for long hours.

  • Neck pain is variable from patient to patient, so generalised treatment approach can aggravate the problem. However, most neck problems are treatable if spotted/ diagnosed in early stages. However complex they may seem initially, the patient can be helped to return to work as well as continue enjoying their favourite hobbies or sports.

  • At David Physio & Sports Clinic, each individual is thoroughly assessed by a specialised clinician prior to commencing appropriate (NICE) recommended treatment such as with analgesics, muscle relaxants, massage, exercises or manipulation. This enables the clinician and the patient to develop an individualised approach based on objective findings.

  • In serious or severe neck/head injury, the individual may experience concussion, visual disturbance, dizziness, severe headaches and migraines, nausea, numbness, pins and needles in the upper limbs or they may find themselves frequently dropping objects. In such situations we advise people to seek advice from A&E as soon as possible.
